Auction Extensions

Handle last-minute bids with automatic extensions

Auction Extensions

How Extensions Work

  • Allow last-minute bids to extend the auction window
  • Set the duration for each extension
  • Limit the number of allowable extensions

Why Use Extensions?

Extensions prevent "bid sniping" - when a player waits until the last second to place a winning bid.

Extensions give other members a fair chance to counter-bid.

Extension Settings

Extension Window

How much time gets added when a bid is placed near the end.

Recommendations:

  • Short auctions (15 min): 2-minute extensions
  • Medium auctions (1 hour): 5-minute extensions
  • Long auctions (24 hours): 15-minute extensions

Extension Trigger

How close to the end must a bid be to trigger an extension?

Example:

  • Trigger: Last 30 seconds
  • Extension: Add 2 minutes
  • Result: Any bid in the final 30 seconds adds 2 more minutes

Maximum Extensions

Cap the total number of extensions to prevent auctions from running indefinitely.

Recommendations:

  • Casual guilds: 5-10 extensions
  • Competitive guilds: 3-5 extensions (decisive bidding)

Example Scenarios

Scenario 1: Conservative Extensions

  • Auction ends at 8:00 PM
  • Player A bids at 7:59:45 PM (15 seconds left)
  • Extension triggered: Auction now ends at 8:02 PM
  • Player B bids at 8:01:50 PM
  • Extension triggered again: Auction now ends at 8:04 PM
  • No more bids → Player B wins

Scenario 2: No Extensions

  • Auction ends at 8:00 PM sharp
  • Player A has the highest bid at 7:58 PM
  • Player B bids at 7:59:59 PM
  • Player B wins (bid sniping successful)

Recommendation

Most guilds use 2-5 minute extensions with a 5-extension cap for fair competition.
